How are you enjoying the summer so far? I’m not sure what the weather is like where you live—whether it’s super hot or a bit cooler—but here in Toronto, we had an especially cold winter, so we’re soaking up every bit of sunshine now!

With the sun streaming through the window, flowers blooming, and birds singing, I felt inspired to design and crochet these 5 extra-large amigurumi projects, also known as XL amigurumis. They’re super versatile, and there are so many ways you can use them!

Personally, I love turning them into decorative pillows. For that, I use soft acrylic yarns in bright, cheerful colours that are perfect for cozy, eye-catching cushions.

But you can also crochet them using cotton yarn and use them as placemats for your table. And if you have a thicker cotton yarn like t-shirt yarn (trapillo), you can even make them into beautiful rugs that brighten up any space.

The only thing you really need to keep in mind is using a hook size that matches your yarn. Most yarn labels will recommend a hook size, but for amigurumis—especially if you’ll be stuffing them—I suggest using a hook that’s half a size or even a full size smaller, so your stitches stay tight and closed.

For example, if your yarn is a size 4 and the label recommends a 5 mm hook, you could use a 4.5 mm or even a 4 mm hook. When I work with chenille or t-shirt yarn, I usually stick to the hook size suggested on the label, and the results turn out great.
